Science in Action: Solar & Wind Powered Tiny Homes!

Feb 3 2026 — Some of our Physics students recently wrapped up their electricity unit with a hands on engineering challenge that blended creativity, design thinking, and real world physics. Students built miniature houses out of popsicle sticks and then powered an LED light inside using either a solar panel, a mini wind turbine, or a combination of both. As they worked, students applied their understanding of electricity, circuits, energy transfer, and system behavior. They had to figure out how to wire their circuits correctly, test different configurations, and troubleshoot issues like weak connections, insufficient current, or inconsistent power from their renewable sources. Watching them adjust their designs and test new solutions captured the spirit of inquiry and revision at the heart of the NGSS. This project also naturally reflects NGSS expectations around engineering design. Students weren’t just following instructions — they were making decisions, refining their models, and improving their houses based on what the evidence (and their LEDs!) were telling them. Using solar and wind energy grounded their learning in real-world applications of renewable energy systems, helping them see how energy is captured, converted, and used to power devices in everyday life. The excitement in the room was contagious. That moment when a student’s LED finally lit up — powered entirely by a source they built and wired themselves — showed just how much their confidence and understanding had grown. It was a wonderful culmination of our electricity unit and a perfect example of how hands on learning brings physics to life. More student-powered physics adventures coming soon!
